He has worked as a grower, runs many of the training courses for Garden Organic and regularly writes for Grow Your Own magazine.  He has a passion for soils and composting and loves discovering how to grow and cook new vegetables from the various ethnic communities around the Midlands.

The Principles of Organic Growing

Most people think of organic growing as ‘growing without chemicals’ but there is so much more to it than that. Organic growing makes the best use of resources by working with and understanding natural processes, considering ways to plan ahead in order to create an environment where crops will thrive. This course will provide you with a fantastic overview of what it means to grow organically through a mixture of interactive and practical activities.

What you will learn:

  • Gain an overview of the organic principles;
  • The best ways to improve your soil to grow healthy plants;
  • How to plan your plot and rotation;
  • Addressing and managing common challenges in organic growing;
  • How to recognise and attract beneficial creatures in your plot;

Introduction to seed saving    

Join us for this morning course and learn everything you need to know to get started with seed saving. You’ll gain a detailed understanding of the benefits of saving seed and how to select plants for particular characteristics, as well as step by step instructions on saving seeds.

We’ll introduce the main principles involved in growing plants to seed, harvesting, drying, cleaning and storage. We focus on the more straightforward annual crops to allow you to immediately apply these skills to your next harvest.

What you will learn:

  • Gain an understanding of the benefits of saving seed and how to select plants for particular characteristics, as well as step by step instructions on saving seeds;
  • Which plants need isolating to stay true;
  • How to save seed from Tomatoes, peas, French beans, lettuce, and peppers;
  • Methods of cleaning seed for these vegetable types;
  • How to dry seed for storage.

Includes refreshments and cake

Course level: beginner seed saver who has knowledge of growing vegetables.

Composting: the cornerstone of organic growing    2 – 5pm    Cost £45

Composting is a key element of organic growing. There has always been something magical about the transformation of green waste into a product that can benefit your soil and help your plants to thrive. This course will help you to fine tune your composting process and gain an understanding of the processes that happen and how this can be influenced by different mixes and types of bin. We will also show you how to make the best use of your compost for growing healthy food.

What you will learn:

  • The basic components of successful composting including where to site your compost bin and which ingredients to compost;
  • Demonstration of different bin types and composting systems;
  • Recognising the creatures in your compost bin;
  • How to deal with problem compost heaps;
  • A basic knowledge of how to use compost in the garden, potting mixes and mulches.

Course level:  Beginners

What you need to bring:  Sensible shoes and outdoor wear.
